Nothing You Write is Perfect — That’s Okay.

Not unlike other art forms, writing is subjective. Objectively, there is no one perfect story. Any advice you get is more or less someone’s opinion.

Not everything you create is going to land with everyone. Think of your favorite musical artist as an example. Do you love every single song without fail?

Chances are, you don’t. Their releasing of a song that you don’t personally like doesn’t reflect a personal failure on their part, nor does it mean that it’s wrong if other people like it. Writing is the same way. Not everything will connect with your audience, but inversely, you never know when something you write is going to land with an entirely new audience.

All you can do is mold everything you put out into the world to be the best that you can get it; once it’s out there, it’s no longer yours to mold and control, it now belongs to the audience to take meaning from as they see fit. When you let go of the control, you can focus on creating the things you love.

The artists and creators you look up to never would have gotten to where they are today if they took every piece of criticism they received to heart. Don’t let a bad comment lead to the ultimate destruction of what could be a a fulfilling career. But more than that, don’t let the fear of rejection stop you from even trying in the first place.

You never know who’s watching.
